Ministry of the People, Social Development and Family Services Celebrates Centenarian Sylvanie Romney

The Ministry of the People, Social Development and Family Services (MPSDFS) in its ongoing drive to honour the lives and legacies of the nation’s most senior citizens, through its National Centenarian Programme, proudly recognizes Mrs. Sylvanie Romney. Mrs. Romney celebrated her milestone 100th birthday on Saturday 12th July, 2025 surrounded by family and loved ones, at her home along Oropouche Road, Sangre Grande.
Born in Caigual Village on July 8, 1925, Mrs. Romney, affectionately known as “Syl” or “Sylvan”, grew up in a rural and industrious era. She fondly recalls her childhood days watching her parents pick and dry cocoa and coffee for sale at the Control Board. A skilled seamstress and dedicated mother, Mrs. Romney built her life around family, faith, and service.
Today, she remains the proud matriarch of a loving and devoted family that includes children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Married for 63 years to her late husband, Mark Romney, Mrs. Romney says her proudest achievements are her children—Marilyn, Brenda, and Arlene—and especially her granddaughter, who has stood by her side throughout her life. Mrs. Romney attributed her remarkable longevity to “the Almighty and excellent care by my granddaughter.” She encouraged the younger generation to “be respectful, respect themselves and pray.” Her favourite saying, “God is great all the time,” remains a guiding mantra in her life. She spends her days peacefully—eating, resting, and enjoying time with loved ones.
During a heart-warming ceremony hosted at her home, Parliamentary Secretary at the Ministry, Senator Dr. Natalie Chaitan-Maharaj, was present to honour Mrs. Romney on behalf of the Government and people of Trinidad and Tobago. In her remarks, Senator Dr. Chaitan-Maharaj expressed how “honoured and happy” she was to be part of such a meaningful occasion. She presented the centenarian with a medal and Certificate of Achievement on behalf of the Ministry and Government, along with a special hamper courtesy National Flour Mills and a beautifully decorated birthday cake courtesy Kiss Baking Company.
The Ministry remains committed to celebrating the contributions of the elderly through the National Centenarian Programme, and will continue to support their wellbeing.
