Ministry of the People Continues Nationwide Disaster Relief in the Caroni District

As part of its ongoing nationwide disaster relief efforts, the Ministry of the People, Social Development and Family Services (MPSDFS) distributed assistance to families affected by recent adverse weather conditions. The event, held on Tuesday December 16th, 2025 at the Chaguanas Borough Corporation, supports households as they work to recover and restore stability.

Minister of the People, Social Development and Family Services, the Honourable Vandana Mohit, addressed beneficiaries and stakeholders, emphasising the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring that families feel supported during times of disruption and uncertainty.

“When disaster strikes, families are left managing loss while trying to regain a sense of normalcy. Our role is to respond with care, timeliness and compassion, and to ensure that people are supported as they begin the process of recovery,” Minister Mohit said.

Disaster relief grants were provided to ten (10) households, representing twenty-one (21) beneficiaries from the Caroni District. The total value of assistance distributed amounted to sixty-seven thousand, five hundred dollars ($67,500). The grants were issued under the Household Items category of the General Assistance Grant to assist families in replacing essential items lost or damaged.

Mayor of Chaguanas, His Worship Faaiq Mohammed also addressed the gathering and acknowledged the continued collaboration between this Ministry and the Chaguanas Borough Corporation in supporting residents affected by adverse weather conditions.

The Ministry of the People, Social Development and Family Services serves as a second responder during times of disaster, providing support to families once the immediate danger has passed. In addition to household grants, eligible families may access temporary food support, rental assistance, home repair materials and psychosocial services, recognising that recovery involves both physical and emotional wellbeing.

As disaster relief distributions continue across Trinidad and Tobago, the Ministry remains focused on placing people at the centre of its response and ensuring that families affected by disaster are supported as they rebuild and move forward.
