Statement from Minister of the People, Social Development and Family Services, The Honourable Vandana Mohit on recent cases of Gender-Based Violence

By Corporate Communications March 19, 2026

The Ministry of the People, Social Development and Family Services notes with deep concern recent reports of violence against women across Trinidad and Tobago. These incidents are a stark reminder that gender-based and domestic violence are not isolated occurrences, but urgent and persistent social challenges that demand sustained, collective action. Recent cases, both locally and internationally, continue to highlight the devastating impact of such violence on individuals, families and communities, underscoring that this crisis affects real lives and futures.
The Ministry remains firmly committed to addressing gender-based violence (GBV) and its root causes with compassion, urgency and strategic focus. We recognise that all forms of violence, physical, emotional, psychological and digital, inflict profound harm and deny women and girls their dignity, safety and opportunity.

Through the Gender Affairs Division, the Government has implemented a comprehensive, coordinated response to GBV as a national priority. Central to this effort is Trinidad and Tobago’s National Strategic Action Plan on Gender-Based Violence and Sexual Violence, a framework guiding prevention, protection and accountability across sectors. The Division also provides critical services, including the National Domestic Violence Hotline (800-SAVE/7283) and a safe shelter for women and their dependents. Ongoing initiatives include public education campaigns, community outreach and sensitisation programmes, alongside strengthened partnerships with the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), schools, civil society organisations and international stakeholders to enhance survivor support and promote early intervention.

Addressing the cultural and social drivers of GBV is essential to this work. Through initiatives such as the Men’s Bureau and other broader programmes targeting males, the Ministry actively engages men and boys as allies and advocates for change. Collaboration with the UN Spotlight Initiative has further strengthened national capacity for evidence-based interventions. Public engagement efforts, including the “Unmute the Silence” campaign during the Sixteen (16) Days of Activism and youth-focused initiatives like “The Walls for Change” Art Competition, continue to challenge harmful norms and promote respect, equality and non-violence from an early age.

The Ministry calls on all citizens and sectors to play an active role in building a safer society, one where concerning behaviours are addressed, where communities stand together in support of those at risk, and where the rights and dignity of women and girls are fully upheld. As we reflect on International Women’s Day 2026 and reaffirm that women’s rights are human rights, we urge a renewed national commitment to education, prevention, responsive services and community solidarity.

The Government of Trinidad and Tobago stands in unwavering solidarity with survivors, the families of victims, and all those affected by gender-based violence. We remain resolute in our duty to protect, empower and partner with all citizens in building a nation where every individual can live free from violence and in full dignity.
