The Government of Trinidad and Tobago, through the Ministry of the People, Social Development and Family Services officially launched the Mindful Me: Journal at a ceremony held on Wednesday, January 28, 2026 at the Chaguanas Borough Corporation Auditorium. The initiative, which aims to help students cope with school and test stress, is a collaborative effort between the Child Affairs Division of the Ministry and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
Speaking at the launch, which brought together partner agencies, representatives of the Ministry of Education, principals, teachers, stakeholders and primary school students, Minister of the People, Social Development and Family Services, the Honourable Vandana Mohit, underscored that children’s mental and emotional health is a national priority that must be protected, nurtured and actively supported.
Minister Mohit stated that “It is our Government’s declaration that the mental and emotional wellbeing of our children matters, and that it must be protected, nurtured, and prioritized. She further emphasised that, “Many children and adolescents experience mental and emotional challenges. These challenges are often intensified by academic demands, examinations, and broader societal pressures. This reality reminds us that supporting mental wellness is not optional, it is essential.”
The initiative aligns with the Government’s people-centred approach to development and its broader policy framework, including the ongoing development of a National Child Poverty Reduction Strategy, informed by the 2023 Multi-dimensional Child Poverty Study conducted by UNICEF.
Designed as a practical, age-appropriate tool, the Mindful Me Journal helps children understand their emotions, manage stress, and build resilience—especially during examination periods. The initiative reinforces the message that a child’s worth is not defined by a single exam or grade.
With UNICEF’s support, 500 journals and 100 specially branded Mindful Me bottles were produced, ensuring this resource reaches children who need it most, particularly those preparing for the Secondary Entrance Assessment in March 2026.
The launch reaffirms the Government’s commitment to prioritising the mental and emotional wellbeing of children and promoting their holistic development. Plans are underway to roll out the initiative across all education districts in Trinidad and Tobago, including Tobago, while engaging parents and educators as key partners in supporting students.
