The Ministry of the People, Social Development and Family Services, through the National Social Development Programme (NSDP), today Wednesday February 4, 2026, disbursed vital financial support under its Home Repair Grants and Disaster General Assistance Grants programmes, benefiting vulnerable households in central Trinidad.
As part of the Ministry’s ongoing commitment to improving the quality of life for citizens recovering from disasters and those facing financial hardship, Minister of the People, Social Development and Family Services, the Honourable Vandana Mohit led a Ministry team in the delivery of necessary assistance to families in the borough of Chaguanas and the Couva, Tabaquite, Talparo region.
A combined total of one million, one hundred and seventy-one thousand, seven hundred and ten dollars ($1,171,710.50) in Disaster Relief and Minor Home Repair Grants was distributed to a total of sixty-seven (67) households, representing two hundred and twenty-eight (228) beneficiaries. These grants aim to help households recover and rebuild following disasters, ensuring faster and more resilient recovery.
Minister Mohit reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication to people-centred support and ensuring that existing backlogs are cleared. She stated that this distribution is the continued fulfilment of a solemn responsibility of the Government to stand with its people when hardship disrupts lives, whether that hardship comes without warning or builds quietly over time.
“Our Government remains committed to building a social protection system that is people-centred, responsive, and fair, one that recognises both urgent need and long-standing vulnerability. To date since this administration has entered office, we have diligently erased the backlog and unnecessary delays in providing this essential relief,” Minister Mohit said.
She further emphasised that, “recovery is not only about fixing what is broken. It is about restoring confidence, dignity, and hope. It is about ensuring that families can move forward without being permanently set back by circumstances beyond their control.”
The Ministry of the People, Social Development and Family Services serves as a second responder during times of disaster and provides relief in the form of grants and/or psychosocial support to families which become vulnerable due to unforeseen disaster events. The Ministry continues to prioritise responsive social protection programmes that alleviate immediate hardship and promote long-term stability and empowerment for all citizens of Trinidad and Tobago.
