The Ministry of the People, Development and Family Services continues its commitment to supporting vulnerable citizens with the distribution of $82,700.00 in Disaster Relief Grants. The distribution ceremony was held today, Saturday July 12, 2025 at the Cunupia Government Primary School, Chin Chin Road, Cunupia.
At the ceremony, eight (8) families, comprising a combined total of thirty-one (31) persons, received disaster relief grants, including household items, clothing and school supplies, bringing tangible support to those affected by recent adverse events in the region. These grants, delivered under the Ministry’s National Social Development Programme (NSDP), are part of the Government’s ongoing commitment to building a more resilient, inclusive and people-centred society.
Delivering the feature address, the Honourable Vandana Mohit, Minister of the People, Social Development and Family Services, emphasized that the Ministry remains a critical second responder in times of national crisis, working alongside the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government, Disaster Management Unit (DMU), to offer timely financial and psychosocial assistance to affected citizens.
Minister Mohit stated that, “these grants are more than just financial support, they affirm that, as a nation, we do not abandon our citizens in their time of greatest need.” To the recipients, she further emphasized that, “this is not a handout, but a hand up. Your resilience is inspiring and your Government is committed to walking this journey of recovery with you.”
Minister Mohit also praised the Ministry’s staff for their dedication to ensuring both transparency and timeliness in the grant delivery process, while also offering vital counselling and advocacy services to affected households.
This initiative underscores the Ministry’s steadfast focus on reducing poverty, addressing inequality, and ensuring that no one is left behind, particularly during times of disaster or personal hardship. The Disaster Relief Grant Programme is one of several interventions designed to cushion the effects of disaster-related losses, helping families to recover and rebuild with dignity and hope.
