Ministry of the People ushers in Child Abuse Prevention Month with an Art Exhibition and Prize Giving event

By Communications April 1, 2026
“Child abuse remains a serious issue in Trinidad and Tobago, taking many forms, including physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, and neglect. Addressing it requires a comprehensive, coordinated, and sustained response.”

These were the words of the Honourable Vandana Mohit, Minister of the People, Social Development and Family Services, as she delivered the feature address at the Child Abuse Prevention Art Competition Prize Giving and Exhibition, held today at Mille Fleurs, Port of Spain.

The Exhibition and Competition, held under the theme “My Rights, My Voice, My Future,” was designed to raise awareness of child abuse prevention through the visual arts. It forms part of a wider national sensitisation effort aimed at promoting child protection and children’s rights across Trinidad and Tobago.

In her address, Minister Mohit emphasised the importance of listening to children and valuing their perspectives. “Through this initiative, children were encouraged to explore and express their understanding of their rights. In doing so, they have not only demonstrated awareness, but they have challenged us as adults to do better,” she stated. The Minister further noted, “they have reminded us that child protection is not an abstract concept. It is real. It is urgent. And it requires action.”

A total of thirteen (13) submissions were received from children across the country, with the top three entries receiving awards. Selected pieces were also showcased at Mille Fleurs, amplifying the voices of young participants and reinforcing the national commitment to building a safe, supportive, and rights-respecting society.

Beyond recognition of artistic talent, the competition served as both an educational tool and a platform for meaningful engagement. It enabled children to actively contribute to the national dialogue on their rights and safety, while fostering greater empathy, awareness, and a sense of shared responsibility among both youth and adults.

This initiative underscores the Ministry’s ongoing commitment to child protection and to creating spaces where children are empowered, heard, and safeguarded.
