The Ministry of the People, Social Development and Family Services (MPSDFS), under the leadership of the Honourable Vandana Mohit, continues to deliver on its mandate of supporting vulnerable citizens through timely and impactful interventions.
Earlier today, Wednesday 8th April, at the Barataria Community Centre, the Ministry distributed Disaster Relief and Minor Home Repair Grants to residents of the San Juan/Laventille region, reaffirming Government’s unwavering commitment to restoring stability, dignity, and improved quality of life for affected families.
The Feature Address was delivered by The Honourable Vandana Mohit, Minister of the People, Social Development and Family Services, who reminded attendees that
“these grants are not just financial transactions, but lifelines-restoring hope, rebuilding homes, and renewing confidence in a brighter tomorrow.”
Minister Mohit emphasized that each grant represents a story of resilience and a renewed opportunity for families to rebuild. She noted that the Ministry’s work goes beyond assistance-it is about restoring dignity, strengthening communities, and ensuring that citizens are not left behind in their time of greatest need.
A total of fifty-one (51) households, representing one hundred and forty-one (141) beneficiaries, received assistance valued at $738,059.00. This included:
- Home Repair Grants to thirty-three (33) households, benefiting ninety-four (94) individuals, valued at $319,259.00; and
- Disaster Relief Grants to eighteen (18) households, supporting forty-seven (47) persons, valued at $418,800.00.
These interventions provide immediate financial relief for food and essential household needs, while also enabling longer-term recovery through safer housing conditions and access to psychosocial support services.
The distribution ceremony brought together key national leaders and stakeholders, underscoring a unified approach to social support and community resilience.
Also delivering remarks were The Honourable Devesh Maharaj, Minister of Justice and Member of Parliament for Aranguez/St. Joseph, who emphasized the importance of community support and responsive governance; and The Honourable Saddam Hosein, Minister of Land and Legal Affairs and Member of Parliament for Barataria/San Juan, who reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for the needs of constituents and strengthening community infrastructure;
This latest distribution forms part of a broader national effort as the Ministry expands its reach across communities-bringing people-centred, compassionate support directly to those who need it most.
