Ministry of the People Addresses Recent Case of Violence and Forced Labour
The Ministry of the People, Social Development and Family Services (MPSDFS) reaffirms its commitment to protecting those affected by violence, including domestic and gender-based violence, while working alongside key partners to ensure timely support, intervention, and care. The Ministry advises the public that it is aware of reports circulating in sections of the media regarding violence, including physical assault and forced labour, affecting a local family. The MPSDFS also acknowledges that the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) is actively addressing the matter through its various units, including the Victim and Witness Support Unit.
The Ministry fully supports the ongoing work of the TTPS and reaffirms its commitment to assisting individuals experiencing violence and family-related challenges through its key divisions, including the Gender Affairs Division (GAD) and National Family Services Division (NFSD).
Through the GAD, critical services are provided, including the National Domestic Violence Hotline (800-SAVE/7283) and a safe shelter for women and their dependents. The Division also leads ongoing community outreach and sensitisation initiatives, supported by strengthened partnerships with the TTPS, schools, civil society organisations, and other key stakeholders. These efforts are aimed at prevention and enhancing support for survivors by promoting early intervention.
The National Family Services Division continues to provide psychosocial support to affected individuals in the wider family system and works closely with the TTPS Victim and Witness Support Unit to deliver timely and appropriate interventions.
The Ministry calls on all citizens and sectors to play an active role in building a safer society, one in which warning signs are addressed early and support is extended to those at risk.
