Port of Spain, August 25, 2026 - A safe place to stay can be an important first step towards rebuilding one’s life. Recognising the contribution of the San Fernando Centre for Displaced Persons in meeting that need, the Ministry of the People, Social Development and Family Services (MPSDFS) presented a one-off grant of Forty-Two Thousand, Two Hundred and Seventy Dollars ($42,270.00) to the Centre, to support its Beyond Shelter: A Holistic Reintegration Programme.
The grant was presented to Mr. Asad Yacoobali, Chairman of the San Fernando Centre for Displaced Persons, by the Minister of the People, Social Development and Family Services, the Honourable Vandana Mohit, on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at the Centre’s St. Vincent Street, San Fernando location.
The funding will provide structured counselling and psychotherapy, case management and related services for one year, while also supporting the upgrade of existing sleeping facilities through the purchase of bunk beds, mattresses and pillows. These interventions will enhance the assistance available to residents as they work towards greater stability and independence.
For the past ten years, the Centre has provided a safe and supportive environment for socially displaced and homeless persons, primarily men requiring accommodation and assistance. Its clients include elderly persons, persons with disabilities, employed persons and other vulnerable individuals.
The Centre currently operates primarily through community and corporate donations, fundraising, member contributions and volunteer support. This is the first funding it has received from the Government, marking a significant milestone for the organisation.
Minister Mohit noted that,
“Our support for Non-Governmental Organisations is an investment in stronger communities. These organisations are deeply rooted in the communities they serve and bring valuable knowledge of needs and circumstances. By working in partnership with them, the Ministry can extend its reach and ensure that support is responsive to the realities and needs of people at the community level.”
By supporting initiatives such as this, the Ministry is strengthening partnerships with civil society organisations that make a meaningful difference in the lives of vulnerable persons and communities, while advancing efforts that promote dignity, independence and improved quality of life.
